Engineers for a Sustainable World wins Mondialogo

Engineers for a Sustainable WorldThe Stanford student organization Engineers for a Sustainable World (ESW) received gold and silver Mondialogo Engineering Awards this year. The Mondialogo Award recognizes work of engineering teams in the developing and developed world that address developing world needs as outlined in the UN Millennium Development Goals. The awards are sponsored by UNESCO and Daimler. ESW previously won the Dean’s Award for Outstanding Student Organization in 2008-2009.

The organization hosts a service-learning class CEE 177S/277S, Design for a Sustainable World, taught by Professor Greg Deierlein and partially funded by the Haas Center. The class went on to apply their knowledge in disaster relief and preparation after the school year ended.

The Silver Award went to a collaboration project between Stanford’s ESW team and a team at University Andalas in Padang, Indonesia. The project focused on tsunami evacuation infrastructure in West Sumatra. The Gold Award went to a collaborative project between Stanford and the Delhi College of Engineering in India that focused on environmentally friendly technologies and clean water in India.

Kudos to ESW for their exemplary achievements!
