This program uses resources provided by Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education departmental curriculum initiative funds. Faculty are invited to apply for $1000 to $5000 awards to support the design and development of undergraduate courses that combine public community service with academic study. This includes proposals that add a significant service component to an existing course or those that create a new course with a notable service component.
Criteria for selection:
Though all faculty are invited to apply for service learning funds, priorities for selection include:
What we ask of you:
In addition to carrying
out proposed activities, we ask faculty recipients of these funds to
submit a short report on the funded course. Information should include
an informal assessment of the educational effectiveness for students,
the value of the service-learning project to the community, the
instructor’s own experience, and plans for improving the course in its
next offering.
Faculty receiving Service-Learning Initiative funds may be invited to make a presentation at the Haas Center's Faculty Forum in Public Service Education. These quarterly events provide opportunities for faculty to evaluate and document individual and collective service-learning efforts as well as to share strategies, ideas and success stories related to service-learning.
A limited amount of funding is available for new service-learning courses that focus on graduate students.
Criteria for selection:
See criteria listed above under new undergraduate course proposals.
