What if I have my own idea?
- Public service advising is
available to help you in thinking through your public service ideas. The Haas
Center uses its Principles of Ethical and Effective Service as a guide and we
offer expertise in planning one-time service projects and developing your own
service project, program, or student organization.
- Fellowships can be
self-designed and provide students with the support to develop and implement
innovative service projects in collaboration with communities to effectively
address their needs.
- Community
Service Work-Study allows students who are eligible and have an idea for a project
or a position with a local nonprofit or government agency to contact the
organization and design a placement opportunity.
- Alternative
Spring Break (ASB)
trips are student-designed! Each year, the ASB program provides 25–30
students the opportunity to organize and lead a trip that can focus on a range of issue areas.
- Community-Based
Research Projects can also be self-designed. Sign up for the Introduction to Community-Based Research course offered fall and
spring quarters or contact Haas Center program staff for individualized
consultation on how to develop an effective Community-Based Research project.
- Directed readings and Student Initiated Courses allow
students to research, read or teach about social issues related to their service
endeavors through independent arrangements with faculty. These directed
readings can be incredibly rewarding for students interested in exploring a
public service issue at a deeper level.
