New Middle School Programming

Science in Service will launch new programming for the middle school students at the Boys & Girls Clubs in winter 2012.  Stanford students will now have the opportunity to share science with middle school students.  The programming will be very mentoring-focused and will allow Stanford SiS mentors to be more proactive in making decisions about what their mentees will learn, while still getting programming, curriculum and structure from the SiS leadership team.  Be a part of this exciting new opportunity!

New programming for 2011-12

Science in Service (SiS) will embark on exciting new programming for our community youth at the Boys & Girls Clubs in the 2011-12 academic year.

  1. New programming for elementary-age children at BGCP  We will transition our youth programming - hands-on classes for elementary-school children - to classroom support for Boys & Girls Club staff with the KidzScience curriculum from the Lawrence Hall of Science.  SiS mentors will be classroom science assistants for the Boys & Girls Club staff and science mentors to the children.  This opportunity will launch as a trial in one classroom during fall 2011 and will be open to returning SiS mentors only during fall 2011.  Additional classrooms will launch in winter quarter and will be open to new and returning mentors then.
  2. New middle-school program at BGCP We will launch a new middle-school science program at the Boys & Girls Clubs in winter quarter.  SiS coordinators (student leaders) will be behind-the-scenes developing the new program during fall 2011.  There will be opportunities for prior SiS mentors to provide input.  In December we will recruit new and returning mentors for the middle-school program to start in January 2012.

for anybody who wants to deepen his/her science mentoring abilities and what he/she can offer the Boys & Girls Club youth through SiS.  We focus on topics at the intersection of East Palo Alto and science education.  Non-SiS students are welcome to take the class too, but we will focus on topics pertinent to Science in Service. You can view the syllabus at syllabus.stanford.edu. (An updated syllabus will be posted by September 21.)  Send me your questions!  Note that you can take the class even if you are not mentoring this quarter and even if you are not an SiS mentor.
