The purpose of this standard is to vest responsibility for decisions on crosslisting with the course owner subject to any supervening considerations by the responsible department or school. This standard was designed through discussion with C-USP with a view to improving the academic utility of crosslisting and to put decision making in the hands of faculty.
Standards for Crosslisting Courses
- Courses at Stanford may be crosslisted when the owner or host of the course, along with the host’s department chair or curriculum committee and subject to any school-wide policies, authorizes this process and receives agreement to crosslist the course from the chair or curriculum committee of the recipient department(s) or interdepartmental program(s).
- Crosslisting is considered particularly appropriate when the crosslisted course counts towards the degree requirements for a student majoring in the receiving department(s) or IDP(s) and when it is considered appropriate that the student official transcript reflect the subject of the receiving department.
Thus, a faculty member would be entitled to make decisions concerning the crosslisting of her/his course, subject to any school, department, or program guidelines or restrictions. For a course "owned" by a department (i.e., a course where the department determines the curriculum and typically faculty members rotate in teaching responsibilities), the department would be responsible for crosslisting decisions.
The Registrar's Office requires that one department for each crosslisted course be designated as the administrative owner who is responsible for administration of the course. The Registrar's Office is creating systems to support this process, and it will consult department student services staff who set up courses about the process of initially assigning ownership to courses which are already crosslisted.
A course tagging system is also being developed to improve searchability and facilitate the creation and display of course lists. This effort is intended to assist in focusing crosslisting on courses that count toward degree requirements.
