Degree Certification (For Employers)
Stanford University has authorized the National Student Clearinghouse (NSC) to act as its agent for purposes of degree verification. The NSC will be able to verify degrees for only those students who have not placed a privacy block on their academic record. The student's name when enrolled, Social Security Number, and date of birth will be required for identification purposes and degree verification. Contact the National Student Clearinghouse by phone or visit their web site for current degree verification information, instructions, and fees.
The National Student Clearinghouse (NSC) is a national agency that acts on Stanford's behalf to certify enrollment to most national lenders for student loan deferments. Our agreement with the NSC enables third-parties to retrieve your enrollment information from the NSC directly, and should eliminate the need for you to submit an enrollment certification form each quarter. You can learn more about the National Student Clearinghouse on their web site. Contact the Student Services Center if your lender is unwilling or cannot use the services provided by the NSC.
Degree Certification (For Alumni)
Alumni who conferred their degree in the past 5 years:
Alumni who conferred their degree in the past 5 years can order proof a degree certification document directly through Axess. Both and electronic certified PDF or a paper option printed on official Stanford paper are available.
See below for instructions:
- Go to the Student tab from the Axess home page
- In the drop down menu of the "Academics" section select the "Request Degree Certification" option.
- Click ‘Request Degree Certification’
- Select a processing option
- Electronic Degree Cert – is emailed within 15 minutes
- Mailed 2nd Business Day – certification mailed in two business days; allow an additional 5-7 days for mail delivery within the United States, and 15-20 for international delivery
You will need a SUNetID and password. If you do not know your SUNetID or password, contact ITS.
Alumni who attended more than 5 years ago:
Alumni who attended more than 5 years ago can order proof of past enrollment or verification of a degree by submitting a completed Degree Certification Request form to the Student Services Center. Mail, fax, email (degreecert@firstname.lastname@example.org), or deliver the completed degree certification request form to the Student Services Center located at Tresidder Memorial Union, 2nd floor. If you wish to place your request via email (email@example.com) you must attached a scanned copy of your signed degree certification.

Official degree certifications requested by alumni are printed on official Stanford paper and include the signature of the Registrar and seal of the school printed directly on the secure certification paper.
Due to the large number of requests, Stanford University does not provide individualized or personal requests. However, students and alumni can ask for a cover letter (in person at the Student Services Center) to accompany the certification which explains Stanford's policy and can be attached to the certification.
