Loving Ourselves and Each Other

This month, we’re focusing on self-love and preparation. We will explore what loving yourself looks like and learn how a fellow student carves out time for herself.  As summer internship application season is upon us, we discover how to best prepare for these opportunities and manage the anxiety that can often come with them. Also, we will highlight some exciting internship opportunities across a range of fields for anyone looking to apply. Finally, we’ll spotlight a new resource from the Weiland Health Initiative at Stanford, a program dedicated to supporting LGBTQ+ student mental health through inclusive care and resources.

A Love Story: Mending a Relationship with Yourself

You cannot love someone else without first loving yourself. While that’s surely easier said than done, there are small, easy ways to foster an abundant relationship with yourself that can lead to growth in your relationships with others. Through finding time to do something for yourself each day, you’ll be more at peace with who you are and more at peace with others, too. Whether you set aside ten minutes each day for a walk, five minutes for a gratitude exercise, or two minutes for deep breaths, it makes no difference. In the end, your mind will be extremely happy that you did.

In Focus

How to Not Go Mad With SAD

The Winter Quarter brings limited daylight and is stereotypically the hardest quarter for students. We bulk up on units and sit inside with p-sets while the sun goes down at 5. The change of pace and external environment often results in feeling sad- both the adjective and acronym. SAD, or seasonal affective disorder, is a subset of depression specific to the changing of seasons. Simply put, as our environment gets darker and more dreary, often so does our mood. How can we manage such SAD-ness?

LGBTQ+ Support & Resources at Weiland Health Initiative

Queer people have been building networks of care during times of need throughout history– the AIDS crisis, Harlem Renaissance Drag Balls, the creation of national gay and lesbian organizations that offered solace when society would not welcome us. These networks rely on a connection to vital resources, compassion and collective caretaking. It is in the spirit of our queer and trans ancestors that Weiland Health Initiative offers the LGBTQ+ Preparation Toolkit to students. We need each other and take care of each other!

Stanford Students' Summer Resource List

On campus, one of the most stressful questions is, “What are you doing this summer?” Once Winter Quarter starts, the immense pressure to find a summer internship, job, or research position sets in. It can be challenging to find time to apply to positions while still focusing on your schoolwork, extracurriculars, and part-time jobs. Luckily, we’ve put together a list of some fantastic summer opportunities that Stanford offers to its students, ranging from internships in the arts to internships at non-profits abroad.
