Winter Wellness: Prioritizing You at Stanford

The Flourish is here to help you enjoy a winter of wellness, allowing you to prioritize your well-being even when the world and campus get stressful. In this edition, we'll explore maintaining good sleep hygiene, navigating frosh year, and preparing for study abroad. We'll also introduce some amazing campus resources, including Stanford Well-Being coaching, which offers tailored support for FLI students. By highlighting these resources and addressing mental health from a student perspective, we hope you find ways to flourish this week, this month, or even this quarter!

Prioritizing Mental Health for a Smoother Transition Studying Abroad

Featured Student Story

When I received my acceptance to study abroad, I was filled with excitement, joy, and pride. Studying abroad IS exciting- the culture, food, language, and new experiences are exhilarating! But beneath my anticipation, I have identified feelings of anxiety, overwhelm, and uncertainty, which are normal and common. Understanding the importance of preparing my mental health before I depart is key; by prioritizing my well-being before I leave, I can ensure a smoother transition, deepen my experience, and help me stay grounded once I arrive.

Exploring Well-Being Coaching: An Interview with a Stanford Coach for FLI Students

In the Spotlight

As we continue our commitment to supporting your well-being, we’re excited to delve deeper into one of the valuable resources available to you on campus: Well-Being Coaching. You may have noticed that in the resource section of articles in The Flourish, you will often find information about Well-Being Coaching at Stanford. This month, I interviewed one of Stanford's Well-Being Coaches to give you insight into what it is, what you can expect from it, and how to engage with it, particularly for students who identify as FLI (first-generation and/or low-income).

Beating the Winter Blues

In Focus

Winter quarter has a reputation for being the most challenging quarter, and honestly, it's earned. The weather's cold, the motivation is low, and academic stress somehow feels worse than ever. Find out why you have more control over your Winter quarter than you think.

Let Your Well-Being Flourish By Setting Boundaries

How is Life Tree(ting) You?

In the midst of the winter quarter and the pressure to 'lock in,' it can feel impossible to schedule time for yourself or friends. We might even feel like different parts of our identities are competing with one another, but there is only so much time in one day. Setting boundaries, whether in your personal life or with friends, is an approachable way to organize your life and needs.

Embrace the Journey

Note to my Frosh Self

As a senior, I have had some time to reflect on my Stanford experience. Remembering the difficult times, the lessons, the highlights, and trying to take in all the things still in store during this final year. In reflection, I wanted to share some reminders that helped me during my frosh year and beyond. As a frosh, I often thought everyone else had friend groups, and that nobody really liked me. I felt very insecure and lonely. Here are some things that helped me navigate these feelings.

Sleep Tips to Stop the Scroll

Tip of the Month

We all know how crucial sleep is for personal growth and well-being. But as a resident social media user, I also understand how difficult it can be to put your phone down and stop scrolling at a reasonable time before bed. According to the Stanford CAPS Workshop for Better Sleep, establishing an electronic curfew of 60 minutes before bed is a good practice for sleep hygiene. Here are some things I do before bed that don't involve my phone to help me get a good night's rest.
