Christine Griffith, associate vice provost and dean of students, is retiring after nearly 38 years at Stanford. Griffith, who originally joined Stanford as an office manager in Escondido Village, is credited with developing the university’s first Graduate Life Office.

Qitong “Tom” Cao, a senior majoring in political science, is simultaneously earning a master’s degree in management science and engineering, with an emphasis on computational social science. He will represent his native country, China, as a 2018 Rhodes Scholar.

The Faculty Senate voted April 12 to allow individual Stanford schools to decide whether they will require scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) for graduate admission, replacing a university-wide requirement with school-by-school discretion.

The Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation has named Jack Andraka, a Stanford junior majoring in anthropology and in electrical engineering, as a 2018 Truman Scholar.
