Winter 2025 AIWG Progress Update
After a smooth start in Spring 2024 with an initial 6 courses participating in our first pilot of proctoring at Stanford, the program was expanded to 19 courses in Fall 2024. These courses include many of the largest STEM courses, providing an opportunity to analyze the resources and processes that can ensure a seamless experience for students and instructors.
During each quarter, we gather feedback from instructors, TAs, and students to find aspects to improve and to update proctoring guidelines for a clear and consistent process. Key to this have been interactive live training and FAQ sessions for all participating proctors and instructors. This shares best practices for proctoring and exam environments. Based on the experience of the first two quarters, AIWG is including 21 participating courses this Winter. There is growing interest among other courses to participate in the pilot in future quarters and further promote academic integrity in the testing environment. Faculty who are interested in participating can volunteer their course using the Faculty Interest Form.
Simultaneous with the launching of the proctoring pilot was the creation of the Centralized Testing Center (CTC), part of the Office of Accessible Education (OAE). The CTC administers specific proctored OAE-accommodated exams consistent with the exam experience in the main exam seatings.
Enrollments of courses in the pilot program have totaled more than 2000 students, providing many instructors, TAs, and students the opportunity to participate in proctoring at Stanford and provide feedback on their experience. Through our third-party consultant Grand River Solutions, AIWG has collected feedback from both students and course staff to obtain insight on how to best carry out proctoring at Stanford, as well as identify strategies that support academic integrity. This quarter, AIWG is hosting Focus Groups with both students and instructors, to hear perspectives on proctoring and broader issues related to the interaction of AI tools with academic integrity. We will be running additional student and faculty focus groups in future quarters as well.
