Learning to Love Yourself

Relationships are not always as easy as they seem. The month of February leads one to believe that relationships are easy and filled with big red hearts, boxes of chocolate, and LOVE. For many of us, though, it brings up insecurities, awkwardness, and anxiety whether we are in or not in a romantic relationship. Regardless of what relationship box you check off– self-love, single, in a relationship, it’s complicated– take the time necessary to build a healthy relationship with yourself.

This month we offer tips for strengthening your relationship with yourself (intrapersonal), as well as ways to foster better relationships with those around you (interpersonal)– whether it be a friend, peer, or significant other– and how to support them. We also explore ways to address anxiety and introduce a helpful tool to manage those anxious thoughts. Read on to learn how you can begin building caring relationships with yourself and those around you.

In Focus

Building and Maintaining Healthy Relationships

Positive human connection plays an important role in maintaining our emotional-physical health, well-being, and growth. Whether you are in a relationship for friendship, companionship, or as a partner, relationships can be life-giving and nurturing to our soul. The important thing is knowing how to build relationships where all individuals involved feel supported, connected, and independent. Learn more about some of the qualities that support the foundation of a healthy relationship (romantic or not).

How is Life Tree(ting) You?

Why We Compare Ourselves to Others (And How to Stop)

Are internships, academic performance, social life, or appearance causing you stress as you compare yourself to others? You may have heard the saying “Comparison is the thief of joy,” and while it’s easy to understand this, it may be difficult to stop yourself from comparing your life to others. Society has taught us to be perfect, achieve more, and be the best, ultimately causing us to feel less than in comparison to others. Discover ways to quiet this self-critical voice and how to move towards self-love.

In the Spotlight

Effectively Coping with Anxiety

Have you ever noticed your stress or anxiety levels increase throughout the quarter? Not sure why or how to deal with it? Want to learn how to have a bit more control over how anxious you become? Read on to discover why these anxious thoughts come up, how to recognize them, and helpful tips to manage anxiety healthily. We also share a great resource on campus that may be just what you need.

Tip of the Month

How to Support a Friend

If you begin to notice a change in your friend’s behavior, or that something feels a little "off" with them, you may feel uncertain of how to help them in those moments. While we may want to avoid offending them by bringing it up or are afraid of pushing them away, trust your instincts and be honest about your concerns. Part of being a good friend is showing up when someone we care about is going through a difficult time and asks the difficult questions. Read on to learn how you can start this conversation and begin supporting your friends today.

Struggling to Get Out of Bed These Days? Here’s What You Can Do.

For many of us, there’s no worse sound than hearing our alarm go off in the morning, especially when it’s cold outside. The last thing you want to do is leave your warm, cozy bed to get ready for your day. If you are finding it difficult to get out of bed these days, know that it is natural to want to avoid these chilly starts. Read on to learn why it’s harder to get out of bed during the winter and how to make it easier to do so.
