Starting the New Year Strong: Resetting Your Value Compass with Intentional Goals

As the new year begins, it's easy to focus on resolutions and productivity. But true growth starts with clarity and remembering what matters most in your life, aligning your actions with your values. Through frameworks like ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) and SMART goals, we can set intentions that are both compassionate and purposeful, guiding us toward a year rooted in meaning, balance, and authenticity.

Let's Start the New Year Strong

The start of a new year often brings both excitement and pressure. We’re surrounded by motivation to set goals and “be better.” But what if the culture of the new year wasn’t about doing more, but about reconnecting with what truly matters?

Before jumping into resolutions, take a pause to reset your internal compass. Reflect on our values. Values can be defined as the deeper qualities that guide how we want to live. Values aren’t practical, concrete boxes to check off; they’re directions to move toward as a process and not an outcome. When we drift, returning to them reminds us who we are, grounding us in what we stand for.

In Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), we’re invited to set value-driven goals through actions that express what matters most, even when challenges arise.

  • Value: Growth and resilience → Goal: “When setbacks happen, I’ll write one thing I learned and one next step.”
  • Value: Connection → Goal: “Reach out to one friend each week for a walk or check-in.”
  • Value: Balance → Goal: “Pause for three deep breaths between tasks.”

To turn these intentions into clear steps, you can use SMART goals:

  • Specific (what you’ll do)
  • Measurable (how you’ll track progress)
  • Achievable (realistic for now)
  • Relevant (aligned with your values)
  • Time-bound (with a set timeframe)

Together, ACT and SMART goals create a structure that’s both compassionate and practical. They help you take meaningful action while allowing room for imperfection and growth which is a life-long game.

Try this quick weekly ritual:

  1. Pause. Take three slow breaths.
  2. Reflect. Ask, “Am I moving toward or away from my values?”
  3. Adjust. Choose one small action to realign.

Flourishing isn’t about flawless execution, it's about returning, again and again, to what matters most. As you begin this year, let your goals flow from your values and let your actions reflect your deepest intentions.
