Information to Know

Use of Student Images

Under Stanford’s student privacy policy, registration as a student and attendance at or participation in classes and other campus and University activities constitutes an agreement by the student to the University’s use and distribution (both now and in the future) of the student’s image or voice in photographs, video or audio capture, or electronic reproductions of such classes and other campus and University activities. If any student in a class where such photographing or recording is to take place does not wish to have his or her image or voice so used, the student should raise the matter in advance with the instructor.

Photo Release

Use this release form when photographing or recording individuals for Stanford use, or to obtain permission for using personal photos in an editorial video or other similar product. This is especially important when photographing or recording minors. Keep all releases on file indefinitely. When in doubt, use a release.

Usage Rights and Licensing

VPSA purchases the rights to use images for official Stanford/Student Affairs purposes only (university websites, social media, and printed materials, for example).

Are you hoping to get a copy of an image for use by you or your organization?

We're happy to connect you with our photographers in order to discuss licensing costs. Just complete our form.
