Vaden Health Services

Vaden Health Services is the first stop for diagnosis and treatment of illness, injury, and ongoing conditions, as well as for preventive counseling and education. The center was made possible by a gift from the Vaden family. Other Vaden services include counseling and wellness resources, pharmacy, physical therapy, insurance, travel clinic, the Confidential Support Team and the office of Substance Use Education, Programs, and Resources (SUPER). Vaden also offers Cardinal Care, the university-sponsored student health insurance plan.

Meet the Executive Director of Vaden Health Center and Associate Vice Provost for Student Affairs. James R. Jacobs (Jim)

James R. Jacobs (Jim), MD, PhD, became the executive director of Vaden Health Services and associate vice provost for Student Affairs in March 2016. Jim is also an associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. 

Prior to joining Stanford, Jim held leadership positions in college health at four other universities across the country.  In an earlier phase of his career, Jim was on the faculty at Duke University, where he did research in the Department of Anesthesiology and taught in the School of Engineering. His areas of research included clinical pharmacology and mathematical modeling.

Jim has a medical degree from Duke and a doctorate in biomedical engineering from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. His undergraduate degree is from Johns Hopkins University. He was also heavily influenced by a year spent as a visiting scholar at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Jim is board certified in emergency medicine and is a fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians. Jim’s clinical interests in college health include urgent care, wound care and men's health. His academic interests include emerging young adults, biosecurity and secrecy.

Stanford University requires that all registered students carry adequate health insurance. This requirement can be met either through Cardinal Care, the university sponsored health insurance plan, or through an alternative insurance plan that meets Minimum Health Insurance Coverage Requirements established by the university.

Medical Services is your first stop for the diagnosis and treatment of illness, injury, and ongoing conditions, as well as for preventive counseling and education.  Most of our services are covered for students who have paid the Campus Health Service Fee while some services have fees that may apply.

SUPER provides research-based alcohol and drug prevention education, early intervention services, recovery support and harm reduction programs for the Stanford community via peer educators and professional staff. Our goal is to mitigate high-risk alcohol and other drug usage and their related harms among Stanford students by utilizing health promotion and public health principles through collaborative, cutting-edge, empirically proven educational strategies and outreach programs.

The Walgreens at Vaden, a separate organization co-located with Vaden, pharmacy specializes in students’ needs. The pharmacists work closely with the Vaden clinicians and deliver highly personalized service. Walgreens at Vaden can be reached via telephone at 650.815.2000.
